Her parents have been Jim O'Grady who is a financial adviser and Jan O'Grady. She grew up in Wheaton and went to Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. In commercials, she appeared prior to moving from Illinois' Wheaton to Los Angeles. The career of O'Grady began as an actress in commercials and models in Montgomery Ward. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedic film called She's Having a Baby. She then played a recurring part in ABC comedy China Beach with Dana Delany. She also guest starred in a variety of other shows and was a part of made for TV and independent films. Her debut role on television was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC Police series NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary on ABC's NYPD Blue from 1993 through in 1996. Every year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding Actress for the Drama Series. In 1995, O'Grady was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series alongside the entire cast.
